As a general rule, the older the better.  Card companies made so many cards from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s that only the scarce 1/1 autographed insert cards carrry a lot of value.  It's tough to find anyone willing to buy anything from that era--even the once sought after David Robinson rookie card.  There are simply too many of them out there.

High grade 1957-58 Topps basketball as well as 1961-62 Fleer and 1969-70 Topps can be worth owning.  There are, of course, rookie cards that are valuable like the 1970-71 Topps Pete Maravich, the 1972-73 Julius Erving and the 1980-81 Topps Larry Bird-Magic Johnson combo card.

Common cards from the 1970s are worth around 75 cents to a buck if they're in very, very sharp condition.  The 1986-87 through 88-89 Fleer basketball card sets do have their fans as well.  Michael Jordan sports cards are always of interest--especially those 1990s insert cards.  And yes, we say Jordan sports cards because Michael does appear on a few baseball cards as well, although none are especially valuable.

Released recently, the new Beckett Annual Basketball Card Price Guide #19 features a current star and a former legend on the cover:  Derrick Rose and Michael Jordan.  It's a must have for those with large collections, those trying to identify older cards or those who simply want a great reference guide for some of those obscure issues from years past.

More than 280,000 cards are priced in this softcover book.  It's a virtually complete checklist for nearly every basketball card set ever made; whether it was a regional issue available only in a certain area or those mainstream cards they've been printing for decades.

You'll find the value of basketball cards from the first bubble gum card set that depicted most players from the NBA--the 1948 Bowman set that features the highly priced George Mikan rookie card--to sets and insert cards from the last few years.

For collectors, it's the checklist that's most valuable.  Values can be subjective but knowing which cards you're missing for your set is great information to have.

Published just before the start of the 2011-12 season, the Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide  has a complete checklists and pricing for every important basketball card set from 1910 to present including NBA, WNBA, amateur and foreign players.   In addition to basketball cards cards it also provides pricing on the various coins, cups, stickers and figurines issued over the years. It shows a sample photo for most base sets and inserts, which is great for identifying cards.

Don't expect your local dealer to pay 'book price' if you're trying to sell.  The value of basketball cards really depends on what he can sell them for--if he can sell them at all--and he needs at least a 50% profit margin and willing buyers for any transaction to make sense.  We'd highly recommend the Beckett guides for collectors who have an interest in expanding their collections or simply wanting to know more about the cards that have been produced over the years.  You can order it on Amazon.com.

The league's greatest players convene but once a year.  The 1950s gave us George Mikan, and later Bill Russell and Bob Cousy.  The '60s had Wilt and Oscar.  The '70s brought us Pistol Pete, Clyde the Glide and the'80s launched the Jordan/Bird/Magic era.  The NBA All-Star Game is a showcase for greatness.  The one constant from a collecting standpoint have been the ticket stubs and programs that attendees brought home.

Keep in mind that the number of fans in attendance pales in comparison to baseball's annual Midsummer Classic.  While 45 or 50,000 may see baseball's All-Star Game, NBA arenas usually didn't seat that many back in the early days.  Most times, the NBA All-Star Game is played in front of less than 20,000.  At times through history, attendance was much less than that.  That means there aren't that many surviving programs left from those early days.  In later years, the print run has increased a bit, keeping values lower--but there still aren't that many around.  In our humble opinion, the program is better than a trading card which has just a front and a back.  The program tells a story.  Who played.  Where the game was.  The history.  Ads that take us back in time.  If the program is scored, it might even tell the story of the game.

The first NBA All-Star Game was played in 1951.  It's a rare one, but we do see 1952 and '53 programs on eBay sometimes.  A '52, signed by Cousy and Mikan recently sold for $610.  Two '53 programs from the game in Fort Wayne (that's where the Pistons played prior to moving to Detroit) sold for $867 and $1,052 a week apart.

The '59 program in Detroit?  Worth about $300-400.  The 1965 NBA All-Star game was in St. Louis, home of the Hawks.  Three programs from that game sold in a short period of time for $200-250.

The 1968 game at the new Madison Square Garden had great attendance--over 18,000---and the program sold for a few bucks that day now sells for around $100-130.

Only about 12,000 attended the 1969 game, but that program is worth a little less.

The real bargains in NBA All-Star programs are in the '70s and '80s.  The' 73, '76 and '77 editions are very common.  Too many were made and you can find them for less than $50, sometimes much less.  They're still cool, even if they'll not likely gain a lot of value in the coming years.

Even programs from Michael Jordan's first NBA All-Star game or those from the early Bird/Magic years are cheap...less than $20 for most.  It's a great niche to start collecting.  You can build quite a collection of little conversation pieces for not that much money.

The  cocktail of excitement and the adrenaline of the moment surging through your veins is unlike anything else. Even after hunting for basketball autographs for years, the joy of seeing your hardwood hero in person is unequaled and never loses its appeal. But now that you have the autograph, the next question is what to do with it now?

Basketball signatures are best protected in a display case or otherwise sealed location, keeping dust and outside contaminants from getting to the signature and potentially ruining it. The condition of the autograph plays a large part in the overall value of the autographed piece as maximum worth can be given to an item in mint condition. Dust and wear becomes immediately apparent unless housed properly in a display case. The most ideal display case is a glass one, as the whole point of getting an autograph is to show it off to friends and family, instantly becoming the recipient of jealousy and awe.

Glass or high quality acrylic display cases can be purchased online through links here on Hoops Collector. Prices for cases range from $15 to upwards of $200 depending on the quality and size of the case needed. High quality acrylic cases have the same appearance as glass cases for a fraction of the price. To the casual observer the difference is tough to spot. The memorabilia will remain safe inside and avoid any kind of dust or other contamination. However, for the most valued signed merchandise, it is highly suggested to purchase a glass display case. These cases are typically $100 or more; again, depending on size and shape. There are cases for signed jerseys, basketballs, trading cards, and photos, each with a stand or hook for the prized basketball signature.Once placed in a protective case, be sure to keep the autograph in the box, avoiding handling it as much as possible, as this is one of the leading causes of wear.

So if you ever have the good fortune to receive an autograph, remember that a basketball signature is best protected in a display case. After being cut twice by two teams in December, Lin finally landed in New York where he was promptly shipped to the NBA-D League, then recalled.  Most assumed it would be for a short time.   It looks like they were dead wrong.  Jeremy Lin might have found the right team at the right time.

Lin's 38-point effort against the Lakers on February 10 capped a furious week for the Harvard grad.  He went from supersub to clutch performer to pop culture star in a matter of days, a remarkable transformation in any sport.  He scored more points in his first three games as a starter than any player since the ABA and NBA merged some 35 years ago.  He became the big story of the NBA in a matter of days.  A couple of games may have been a fluke but Lin looks like a serious player and while he's as American as they come, his Asian heritage has also ignited interest in the Far East.

Lin jerseys were the biggest sellers on Amazon.com, with orders coming in from Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and elsewhere.

Lin photos aren't easy to find but they're out there.  He was an undrafted free agent in 2010 before signing with the Golden State Warriors so you can find a few rookie cards and pictures online.  Lin's autographed rookie cards have gone up by hundreds of dollars with insatiable demand pushing prices higher by the hour on eBay.  You can see them here.  You can also find Lin photographic posters via this link to Amazon.com. Fans have been clamoring in New York for Lin jerseys and that's kept manufacturers busy this week.  But you don't have to live in the city to get one.  Lin does have some Knicks shirts and jerseys in the online market already.  You can find them via FansEdge.com or via the above link to Amazon.  Just type "Jeremy Lin jersey" into the search box.

As one of the best California high school players several years ago, Lin photos from his high school days are published in a lot of places online.  He didn't get a ton of coverage at Harvard but he was big enough to be featured in an article on the Crimson in Sports Illustrated during his career on campus.  Now, you have your pick from pictures from his rookie season with the Warriors or the fresh prints and posters from his history-making week with the Knicks--all while wearing your Jeremy Lin jersey of course.

As is the case with dynamic rookie seasons, it doesn’t matter that a player gets better in their second year or third year; the “newness” has worn off.  An athletic freak like Griffin is capable of still bringing people off their seats with an amazing dunk, but the fans and collectors not only want to see dunks, but wins as well.  The leash is still there, but its way smaller than you might expect.  Then Chris Paul showed up…

The arrival of Chris Paul to the Clippers meant one thing to Griffin: the grace period was over with a bang.  Whereas other hobby superstars of recent memory had at least a season or two after their rookie year to grow into their role and lead their team to the playoffs and beyond, Griffin will not have the same luxury.  Nobody expected Yao Ming or LeBron James, the last two overly-hyped rookies and “sure things” to come into the NBA, to win championships right away.  Griffin is the first true sports star of the Youtube and Twitter era, and in a world where social media and immediacy has also affected how cards are collected, people want results right away.  It was why Blake’s cards shot up so high as they did last season and why they can drop just as quickly if the Clippers don’t show signs of living up to the hype.

Here are some Blake Griffin rookie card sales numbers to look at.  In the 90 days before Chris Paul was traded to the Clippers (which included the prolonged NBA lockout), Blake’s rookie cards were selling for an average of $162.79 (601 cards sold) on eBay, including an amazing $32,000.32 for his 1/1 National Treasures Logoman Autograph card.  This was a huge drop from the $243.34 (1,949 cards sold) average that Blake cards enjoyed during the stretch in the regular season (from February to April) when Griffin was racking up awards and accolades.  Since the trade for Paul, the average actually has dropped to $149.13 (569 cards sold), and that even included the sale of the 1/1 National Treasures card again for $38,032. The Clippers have gotten off to a solid start to the season, but it was not the world-beating “Lob City” that people were expecting.

Crazy as this might sound and real world statistical evidence proves otherwise, Blake Griffin has been a hobby disappointment in his second year so far.  And it shows in the softening of his card values.

Now should you expect this slide to continue if the Clippers continue to just be a “solid” team and not a championship contender?  Unfortunately for Griffin collectors who bought way too high last year, the answer is a definite “yes.”  Last year was a lightning in a bottle moment where the demand for Griffin’s cards was bringing in money from both the hardcore collectors and the casual fans who wanted a piece of the action because they caught a Blake highlight on Sportscenter.  Now that collectors are moving on to other players like Ricky Rubio and eagerly anticipating the first official cards of the 2011-12 season, the money is not there in the Griffin market.

Now, this is great news if you’re more of a Griffin collector and not a Griffin investor.   If you’re not willing to break the bank with a National Treasures or Upper Deck Exquisite rookie of Blake, several key rookie cards right now can be had for significantly less than what they were during the madness of last season.

The 2009-10 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket Autograph comes with a great pedigree from football and was one of Griffin's most desirable rookie cards overall, averaging $243.73 for ungraded copies during the first few months of 2011, but now can be had in the $150-$170 range.

Another card with a history is the Crown Royale die cuts and it averaged a staggering $307.39 per ungraded card.  Now it can be had for as low as $185 on eBay, although it still easily cracks the $200 barrier regularly.

A vastly underrated on-card autograph featuring Blake is from 2009-10 Classics.  With a focus more on the legends in the game for that product, Blake’s rookie that is numbered to 499 can now be had for anywhere between $190-$225, which amazingly was not that far from its average during Blakeamania ($210.16).

If you have no interest in autographs, Blake’s best non-autograph rookies comes from Topps final hurrah in basketball before they lost their NBA license.  While you can pick up a Chrome rookie numbered to 999 for less than $100 and even for as low as $50 last year, the Chrome refractors rival many of Blake’s autograph rookie cards.  Last year the refractors that were numbered to 500 averages to around $208 and now can be had for practically half at $104.76.

Because of the fickle nature of collectors, unless Blake somehow manages to win an NBA MVP in the next two seasons (possible) or win an NBA championship (longshot, but not totally out of the question), you will never see those numbers reach the astronomical heights that they achieved last season.  The somewhat sobering reality is that by then, we will have all moved on to the proverbial “next one.”  You can check out what Blake Griffin rookie cards are available on eBay now by clicking here. here.

The first name that comes to mind when discussing most desired items in the sport would be, of course, Michael Jordan autographs.  MJ has been retired for awhile now, but he still enjoys universal popularity.  Rookie Jordan autographed memorabilia is extremely popular, as it predates the rise of basketball as a popular signed collectible market.  But anything signed by his Airness brings a premium of several hundred dollars.  He has an exclusive autograph deal with Upper Deck, which markets a line of Jordan autographs and you can find signed Jordan cards inside a lot of the basketball card products if you\'re lucky enough to pull one.  Today, 8x10 autographs of Jordan will set you back around several hundred dollars.

He\'s not the toughest autograph for collectors, though.  Among pro basketball Hall of Famers, you\'d be hard pressed to find anyone whose signed collectibles go for more than the late Maurice Stokes.  There simply are not any signed jerseys of the star who died much too young.  If you can find anything with a Stokes autograph, you will have a lot of competition and likely have to bid well into the hundreds to get it.

The player who is not only tough to find but also popular is Pete Maravich.  Dead of a heart attack before age 50, Maravich was fairly generous with his autograph and his widow has released a large quantity of Maravich signed checks into the hobby, but a Maravich autograph is always in demand because of his enormous popularity in the 1960s and 70s.  A Maravich autographed ball will set you back at least $2000-3000 in good shape if it is authenticated, a signed 8x10 up to $500-600 and anything else at least $200-400.  Wilt Chamberlain also died young and you will not touch a Wilt autograph for less than $100 in any shape or form, again provided it has the stamp of approval from a respected autograph authenticator.

Reggie Lewis was a very popular Celtics player who died in his prime and Lewis signed items carry a premium with photographs typically going for at least $100 and basketballs upward of $300.

Joe Fulks is another Hall of Famer who carries a premium price tag.  Fulks was elected to the Hall in 1977.

There are other players falling into the rare sports memorabilia category because of their untimely death, but with the popularity of the NBA today, the real value is in the NBA superstars.   Basketball autographs today mean new Kobe Bryant autographed cards tucked into packs of Upper Deck cards or a signed D Wade poster.  They have value now, but once those players reach Hall of Fame status, they will redefine the market for NBA signed collectibles because of the league and its worldwide growth.  Better to invest today!

The shortage of Air Jordan Concords in retail stores is very similar to the craze that happened when Microsoft's new Xbox 360 hits stores in the US in 2005. That release also led to a lot of violence and it brought out the worst in people. If the people in line for those Xbox products knew that they were available on eBay, even though they were unavailable anywhere else, they may not have resorted to such barbaric measures to try to get one. The Jordan 11 Concord shoes are truly a hot commodity right now, but they, too, can be found on eBay. All it takes is a quick eBay search and you'll find the shoes in all sizes and different colors.

In 2012, the Final Four will play out in Louisiana at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Fans all around the country will converge on the Bayou and The “Big Easy” experience will give them another reason to love New Orleans. It all starts on Friday, March 30^th with street parties and celebrations all over the city. The tipoffs are on Saturday the 31^st at 6pm and 8:30pm eastern time. March Madness will culminate on Monday, April 2^nd at 9pm when the national championship will be played out in all it’s glory at the Superdome and on television sets across the nation.

What makes this great is the same thing that makes the Super Bowl great. The same thing that makes the World Series a thrill and the Fourth of July a spectacle in the sky. It’s all-American. It is rooted in our minds and we come, we watch and we cherish it because it is also in our hearts. The final spread of the “Big Dance” means that much to Americans that it is given the respect it deserves.

New Orleans gets 2012, but in 2013 the Final Four moves on to Atlanta, Georgia for another stay at the Georgia Dome. The Georgia Dome is in the heart of downtown Atlanta and sits next to Phillips Arena (home of the Atlanta Hawks), The CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park… and if 2007 was any indication, the Final Four celebrations will no doubt be legendary (minus the tornadoes of course). The Georgia Dome is the home of the Atlanta Falcons and hosts a plethora of shows and events throughout the year.

Next stop is Arlington, Texas in 2014 at Cowboys Stadium. After the Final Four leaves the Southwest it will do a Midwest tour in the Hoosier land. The 2015 Final Four will be at Lucas Oil Stadium in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Lucas Oil Stadium is fairly young but has already played host to the Super Bowl in 2012 and is a venue capable of holding legions of NCAA fans. In 2016, the Final Four returns to the Texas at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Where the Final Four is held is determined by a host of factors including the venue capabilities, hotel availabilities, transportation plans and financial commitments. First of all the Dome (or venue) needs to seat at least 40,000. This is just common sense considering the expected turnout of such an important event. The NCAA men’s basketball Final Four has not been held in a traditional basketball arena since 1996. If you are a city trying to bring the event to you, then position your city as the best possible choice. The host city is generally selected by the NCAA after the overall commitment has been thoroughly communicated.

The Virginia Squires ABA Dr. J jersey was a rare style in use for only one year in the now defunct league. “We had never even seen a common jersey of this type, let alone a Dr. J game-worn example. We knew it had an excellent chance of making $100,000 at auction. It did that and much more,” said Richard E. Russek, president of Grey Flannel Auctions.

The iconic navy and gold UCLA coaching jacket donned by John Wooden was another slam-dunk winner in the sale. Offered with a letter of authenticity signed by the late Bruins' legend, it garnered 17 bids before settling at $183,500.

A serious collector paid $115,242 for Fred Brown's 1979 Seattle SuperSonics NBA championship ring. The sharp-shooting captain of Seattle’s 1978-79 team holds the Sonics’ all-time record for points in a regular season – 58.

Brown’s 14K gold Championship player’s ring, emblazoned “NBA WORLD CHAMPIONS” and featuring a large central diamond, was accompanied by a letter of authenticity written by Brown who said he was donating much of the proceeds to charity after his wife did some housecleaning.

“I think it’s very significant that seven out of the top 10 lots in this sale were associated with basketball. It’s a category that has continued to attract many new and serious collectors to our auctions over the past few years,” said Russek.

Among the top basketball lots were Wilt Chamberlain’s 1968-69 L.A. Lakers Playoffs game-used road jersey, $73,409; a circa-1897 leather-laced basketball with side-panel construction, $59,135; and 1981 NBA Finals MVP Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell’s Boston Celtics World Championship player’s ring with a letter of authenticity from Maxwell, $55,152.

The priciest football-related item was Steve Wright’s  Green Bay Packers Super Bowl ring, with LOA, which scored a winning bid of $73,409. “To our knowledge, it is the only player’s ring from the first Super Bowl ever to be offered in a public auction,” said Russek.

Baseball lots were dominated by a 1959 Roberto Clemente Pittsburgh Pirates game-used flannel home jersey vest, which knocked it out of the park at $55,152.

Russek commented that the excitement level for the sale was “unprecedented…The phones ran hot till 6:55 a.m. We knew that the Dr. J jersey, John Wooden jacket and multiple Championship rings would finish at the top, but we didn’t know in what order. It was a great sale, and we want to thank everyone who participated in the bidding.”
